After getting an email from LendingClub (LC) offering a bonus from transferring an IRA account, it got me thinking whether this was a sign the company needed to attract more investors onto the platform. As a technology platform for Peer 2 Peer or P2P lending, the fintech needs to attract both new investment money and people needing loans in order to grow. LendingClub regularly sends promotional emails to get customers to transfer accounts, but the latest promotion was concerning with the offer to pay a $2,000 bonus. My previous emails were a $500 bonus. The best I can tell is that LendingClub has a long history of paying a 2% bonus for new accounts. As the company gets bigger, the fintech needs to attract bigger investors. For now, this move isn't too alarming, but investors should stay alert for signs that investments drying up if the company gets overly promotional. Definitely looking at dip buying with an expectation that the market sells off some next week. Disclosure: No position
