According to data from the California DMV summarized by Wired, Tesla (TM) has done an absurdly low amount of testing autonomous technology. Not surprising, the test shows that Google (GOOG) now known as Waymo has driven far more test miles in the state of California. Other players such as General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) do a large amount of testing in Michigan that doesn't require reporting test results. The interesting part of the study is that Tesla only did 550 miles of testing during 2016. As well, the tests showed disengagements every 3 miles while Waymo went over 5,000 miles in between disengagements. The Google technology saw a 400% improvement. So should this data concern investors that Tesla isn't leading the market in autonomous technology as proclaimed? In reality, Tesla obtains data from customers via production tests. Anybody that has worked in test environments realizes that controlled test environments such as only driving on highways during daylight with professional drivers doesn't provide a ton of usefulness behind the initial tests. The only way to find out how the technology works is to get the technology in production and find out how it works in the real world. In reality, don't fear Tesla not doing official autonomous tests in California or the above reported results. The company is far ahead of the competition by pushing the limits. The stock appears headed to $300 after the pause over the last couple of weeks. Disclosure: Long GM
