This weekends version of the Weekend Research will focus on how to handle index changes. The S&P Dow Jones Indices made shifts to the market cap guidelines that go into effect on March 20. The shift will cause three changes to the important S&P 500. Typically investors bid up stocks joining the S&P 500 and sell those exiting. Historically, this has been the wrong play. Additions:Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)Raymond James Financial (RJF) Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) Deletions:Urban Outfitters (URBN)Frontier Communications (FTR) First Solar (FSLR) The problem with these index changes is that they are backwards looking. AMD and the other two joins the index after incredible runs in 2016. Urban and First Solar exit the index as retail and solar struggle. To start 2016, the better play appeared First Solar, not AMD. Historically, the best stocks to own over the next year are the ones kicked out of the index. Don't foolishly rush into the new additions. The time to dump AMD is probably right prior to the addition to this big index. Disclosure: No position
